What we check and why

What structured data is

Structured data describes the content of a page in the schema.org vocabulary, usually as a JSON-LD script block. For a firm it typically states the organisation type, name, address, phone, opening hours, the services offered, the people who work there and links to official profiles. Search engines use it to understand entities and to qualify pages for certain rich results; AI assistants can use the same facts to describe your firm accurately.

What we check

  • Every JSON-LD block on the page parses as valid JSON.
  • The schema.org types present, including Organization, LocalBusiness, LegalService, AccountingService, ProfessionalService, Service, Person, Product and FAQPage.
  • Core business properties: name, address, telephone, url, logo and opening hours.
  • sameAs links to official profiles, and Wikidata or Wikipedia references where they exist.
  • Whether contact details, services, pricing and about information are machine-readable in markup or in clear HTML.
  • FAQ structure, semantic HTML landmarks and heading outline, which help machines read the page even without markup.

Accurate expectations

Structured data is not a ranking shortcut. Google uses it to understand pages and to enable specific search features, and it decides when to show them. In 2023 Google limited FAQ rich results to well-known government and health websites, so FAQPage markup rarely produces expandable answers in search today — it can still help machines understand your Q&A content, but do not expect visual changes.

Markup must match visible content. Marking up reviews you wrote yourself, services you do not offer or an address that differs from your business profile can lead to manual actions and confuses AI systems. Keep one consistent set of facts across your site, maps listing and directories.

Next steps

If the checker finds no business markup, generate a LegalService, AccountingService or LocalBusiness block with our schema generator and add it to your homepage or contact page. Then confirm the result with Google's Rich Results Test or the Schema Markup Validator.

Keeping markup maintained

Structured data goes stale like any other content. When you move office, change your phone number, add a partner or open a new location, update the markup at the same time as the visible page. Plugins that generate schema automatically help, but check their output here after updates, as theme or plugin changes sometimes duplicate or remove blocks.

Frequently asked questions

Which schema type should a law firm use?

LegalService, or its subtypes Attorney and Notary where accurate. Accountants use AccountingService; consultants usually ProfessionalService.

Will structured data improve my ranking?

Not directly. It helps search engines understand your page and may enable rich results. Rankings still depend mainly on content quality and relevance.

Is FAQPage markup still worth adding?

Google now shows FAQ rich results only for a narrow group of authoritative sites. The markup does no harm if it matches visible content, and it keeps your Q&A machine-readable for other tools.

What is sameAs?

A property that lists URLs of official profiles for the same entity, such as your LinkedIn page, bar association listing or Wikidata item. It helps machines connect information about your firm.
